"Highway 18" Quick Nine: Air Boats To Extravagance

Highway 18

1. Elimination lurks everywhere! I love the ominous intro from Keri Murphy. Elimination is waiting in the shadows, ready to strike at any moment! None shall be spared! Well, none except for Rob and Charlotte, who have no strikes against them. The remaining teams all have one strike, and it could be the end of the road for Raul and Jameica, Peach and Jay and the Ashleys.

2. Air boats are noisier than I thought. I’ve never been on one of those air boats that cruise through swampland, but they must make some serious racket. Teams have to wear protective earphones, and the other teams have to hold their ears when Peach and Jay take off.

3. Oww! So the air boat captains are sitting in their boats while the teams try to chip balls into the hulls. Poor guys. People are bouncing shots off the captains’ knees. The Ashleys are kind of concerned for their safety, but then they’re like, “Screw them. We’ve got a game to win!”

3. Jameica’s ears are burning. Maybe it’s just the ringing from the swamp boat, but Jameica senses that someone’s talking smack about her on the road to Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach. The other teams seem to think that Raul and ‘Meica are all cutthroat and serious now. I sense maybe they’re getting a little cocky. They’ve coasted since the first episode when they got their strike. They’ve also made enemies of Peach and Jay. Beware! Elimination lurks everywhere!

4. Trumped up. Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago Club looks sweet. That green on the golf croquet course looks to be about the best manicured lawn I’ve ever seen. I’d be afraid to even walk on it. Peach and Jay complete the challenge in the fastest time, and they’re the first to hit the road to Trump International. But they get their directions messed up, and go completely the wrong way. “We’re f***ed,” Peach mutters under his breath. (Is that the first time Peach said a naughty word in this series?)

5. If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying. Raul and Jameica get to Trump International first, and they get to ask one question of the course director. They ask which is the closest hole to the clubhouse. It’s 18. The Ashleys try to cheat and ask the course director two questions, but the race official calls them on it. The Ashleys end up picking the toughest hole.

6. The Campbells are stealing from the Ashleys’ playbook. What’s with Rob and Charlotte pulling an Ashley and dressing alike? They both wear the same color green shirts. They look so cute together! Where’s my camera?

7. The golf gods love the Ashleys. Once the team that was on the ropes and singing songs about how much they suck and are losers, the Ashleys have suddenly been living a charmed life. They’re the first team to complete the clubhouse challenge, even though they picked the toughest hole. But poor Jameica, the golf gods are smiting her on the course. Must’ve been the hubris. Or the fact that she cannot putt.

8. “No pressure. Bulls**t.” I enjoyed that comment Charlotte made while driving back to the clubhouse, having assumed that they’ve come in last and will get a strike. But why was Charlotte so weepy? Even if she and Rob ended up last, they only had one strike and weren’t going home. I took her as being a little tougher. Perhaps she’s been hanging around the Ashleys too much. First with the matching shirts, now with the crying. Anyway, they’ve been spared. And it’s probably safe to say they’re going to be in the final episode, unless they have a total meltdown two weeks in a row.

9. Elimination bites Raul and Jameica! Should’ve seen this coming. Elimination lurks everywhere! Raul and Jameica, so confident that they would make up ground on the golf challenges, were done in by the very thing they were counting on. The hunter has become the hunted! The irony is delicious. Raul and Jameica have reached the end of the road.
