“One Tree Hill”: The Slippery Slope NEVER ENDS 3

I was going to say that last night’s OTH episode was little more than a bummer. As expected, much of the time was spent in mourning for Quentin, who was shot and killed at the end of last week’s episode. Essentially, nearly every scene was a part of a eulogy to Q, with everyone searching for meaning in his death, from Lucas and Peyton, Nathan and Haley, right down to little Jamie. Even Samantha Walker, the shoplifting girl who may or may not have anything to do with Brooke’s battered condition, turned in a sensitive essay about Q’s passing. (We’ll see if she’s really worthwhile or just a big fake.)

But there were a few bigger steps in last night’s OTH, and that made things a little funnier. Dan Scott made it out the door in his latest escape attempt, and out into the yard, where he stumbled onto a grave … of Nanny Carrie’s son. And somehow, through all the threats of violence — including a gun pointed at his face last night — Dan Scott mustered up the humanity to console his captor on the tragedy of her lost son. (His identification with Carrie is interesting — almost like Stockholm syndrome on OTH!) Dan is still a captive, but the dynamic between him and Carrie could be about to change. … And woe to her if she lets her guard down.

But OTH put the fun back in “funeral” last night when Deb, in front of the assembled mourners, boldly and blatantly walked over to Skills and put her arm around him … letting everyone know, at that moment, that they’re “together.” (Though Skills expressed some vague feelings about being on his own last night, as well.)

That has to be one of the highlights in OTH’s tacky history. Glorious. It’s anybody’s guess what’s going to happen when the shroud of Q passes and Nathan has to deal with his mom gettin’ it on with his best friend. What would be great is if Dan Scott finds out what’s going on, and he and Nathan end up bonding in disgust against Deb. (I can’t really see that happening, either, but stranger things have taken place on OTH.)

Whatever the case, that’s one of the funnier plot lines to develop in a while, and it should be a hoot to see that particular powder keg go off.
