"Highway 18" Quick Nine: Beaches, Basketballs And Blunders

Highway 18

1. Rob’s knowledge of Caddyshack is poor. One of the Ashleys is preparing to hit her shot on Daytona Beach, and Rob starts quoting the “Be the ball” Ty Webb Zen golf thing from Caddyshack. But wouldn’t the “Noonan!” psych-out technique be more appropriate here? Either way, if his desired effect was to annoy, then he succeeded. It doesn’t faze the Ashleys, though. They come in second, right behind Peach and Jay.

2. Rashard Lewis’ latest CD drops Tuesday. Rashard Lewis of the Orlando Magic lends his voice talents to the CD in the teams’ Enclaves, instructing them to go to the Magic practice facility, the RDV Sportsplex in Orlando.

3. “Boys, like, make mistakes, too. You know?” A true gem of wisdom from the Ashleys. But the Ashleys made a huge mistake and went the wrong direction on the highway to Orlando.

4. Rob and Charlotte’s mom loves Dwight Howard for some reason. That’s weird. My mom loves Hedo Turkoglu for some reason. Unfortunately, the teams leave the Magic practice facility without meeting a basketball player. You mean they couldn’t at the very least get J.J. Redick to make an appearance?

5. Andy and Parker are an old married couple. Because they were busy squabbling about who’s better at basketball and about who loaned who money in college, Andy and Parker go the wrong way. Rob and Charlotte overcome their penalty and arrive at the RDV Sportsplex right ahead of Peach and Jay.

6. Rob has no time for you, sexy ladies! Rob is initially shocked to see a bunch of Magic dancers at the RDV Sportsplex, as he seems to say “Holy …!” as he walks in the door and they greet him. But he has no time to gawk at the goods. He’ll do that later on the Internet. There is a game to be played here!

7. “Was that some ‘tude?” Raul and Jameica are off this week, but they’ll still play a part in the game. They get to pick which holes the teams have to play at the ChampionsGate clubhouse challenge. Their strategy is to give the better teams the tougher holes to hopefully spread the strikes around. Makes sense. They give Peach and Jay the toughest hole, and they’re not thrilled about it, even though they understand the strategy. Will there be payback some day? The sweetest payback turns out to be a birdie on the hole with a nice long putt. Peach gives a sarcastic “thanks for giving us the toughest hole” comment to Raul and Jameica. Maybe this is the start of some long-awaited animosity between the teams.

8. Peach is the chaperone. Charlotte remarks that the show feels like they’re all on a school field trip and Peach is the chaperone. But I think he’s more like the bus driver … cause he’s taking them all to school! Peach and Jay played some awesome golf today and stay strike-free.

9. The Ashleys love everyone. The Ashleys love each other. The Ashleys love Raul and Jameica for taking pity on them and giving the easiest hole. The Ashleys love Andy and Parker for stinking it up today and taking the strike.
