8 Questions With … Bill Engvall

1. What has been your strangest fan encounter?

Bill Engvall: In the Charlotte airport … it’s early in the morning, I’m half asleep, walking through the airport, and this guy walks up to me and — not slugs me — but hits me in the shoulder, and goes, “Hey, man,” and it just scared me so much. I thought, “What’s this guy going to do, is he going to bite me?” And he goes, “I think you’re hysterical and I watch your show on TBS! It’s awesome!”

2. You’re at a magazine rack and can pick three magazines. What are they?

Sports Illustrated, GQ, because, believe it or not, I like the articles, and a car magazine. I love old cars.

3. Do you have a favorite sports team?

To me, they’re the California Angels, but now they’re called the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Kinda like the Dallas Cowboys of Irving.

4. When was the last time you were starstruck?

It would have been at Willie Nelson’s 60th birthday [in 1993]. They were filming it, and my job was the comic in between acts that would keep the audience up. Kevin Costner was in the audience, so we’re backstage and one of the people comes up to me and they said, “Hey, Kevin Costner wants to meet you.” They brought him over and my wife is standing there with her mouth agape, and he said, “Man, I think you’re really funny.” … If I had a dream, it would be to do a movie opposite him.

5. If your TV only carried three shows, which three would you want?

The Bill Engvall Show, CSI: Miami and Survivorman.

6. When was the last time you felt like crying?

It would have been when the writers went on strike. TBS had called me and said, “We’re going to pick you up for a second season,” and I was on cloud nine. Then all of a sudden we’re on strike. But it actually worked out great and didn’t affect us at all.

7. What is your favorite condiment?

Salsa.

8. In your life, have you had more “here’s your sign” moments or “you might be a redneck” moments?

More “here’s your sign” moments, and only because I’m the kind of guy that will ask something stupid. Because I don’t really think before I talk, which I really have to work on.

The Bill Engvall Show returns to TBS for its second season beginning June 12.
