Uh … Football?

Man, these two-day work weeks are killing me.

I tuned in to the NFL Kickoff Special last night on NBC. Mrs. Cubicle QB walks in while Kelly Clarkson is belting out some song, and asks me, “What the hell are you watching?” I’m like, “Uh … football?”

I generally hate musical acts before sports events. I’m compiling a list of bands and artists that I want banned from all sports venues (and some of them are bands that I actually like). Having John Mellencamp also perform was like a swift kick to the privates, since we already have to suffer through him during every commercial break. And while I’m not a country music fan, Faith Hill is 1,000 times easier on the eyes and the ears than Pink was. So congrats, NBC, you improved that.

Other observations from last night’s season-opening Colts-Saints game:

I could sense that everyone who drafted Colts RB Joseph Addai collectively wet themselves after he got injured on the first play of the game.

Peyton Manning is in every freaking commercial. Does he even understand the concept of that freaky Sprint ad he was in? Huge points go out to NBC’s Cris Collinsworth for saying at halftime, “Peyton Manning was 11 of 17 in first-half commercials.” Collinsworth might just be the savior of that studio show.

I usually follow live stats on NFL.com’s Game Center during games, but last night it was very glitchy. The score kept showing up as Colts 1, Saints 0.

I felt NBC adding Keith Olbermann to its studio show was a weak move to begin with, and his “Worst Person in the NFL” segment turns me off it even more. I thought, maybe, the Worst Person in the NFL should be Keith Olbermann. And guess what? It was. Yes, Olbermann chose himself for his take on the Michael Vick situation. So all we need is Olbermann to choose himself every week and everything will be fine.

Tiki Barber’s not doing anything for me, either. He’s kind of weird looking to begin with (the eyebrows are distracting), and he comes off as way too mellow and even borderline disinterested. After spending all week ripping his former team and coach, now Barber says, “There are great things happening in Giants land and they do have a chance,” and we’ll have to watch on Sunday to find out what he means. I credit him for not taking back anything he said, but get ready for Tiki Barber’s CYA Sunday Spectacular.

Finally, the Saints proved last night that they will not be in, much less win, the Super Bowl. So many experts picked the Saints, riding this wave of sentiment as the NFL’s darling team, to win it all. While the Saints will win their lackluster division, they are in serious trouble if they have to go on the road in the playoffs.

But I’ll be reassessing the Bears’ Super Bowl chances after the Chargers game. Eek.
