American Horror Story: Apocalypse

FX

Returns: Sept. 12 at 10pm ET/PT

Where We Left Off: The politically themed bloodbath “Cult” found a woman winning the Senate seat and slipping on a hooded robe.

What To Expect: The anthology series’ eighth season (it’s already renewed for two more) is a crossover between Season 1’s Murder House and Season 3’s Coven, and features the return of Jessica Lange. Joining Lange are Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Evan Peters, Adina Porter, Billie Lourd and Leslie Grossman. Lange resurfaces as Constance in the sixth episode, which Paulson directs. “The story begins with the end of the world,” says Alexis Martin Woodall, executive producer. “And then our world begins.” Eighteen months in the future, Cordelia continues reigning as Supreme of the Coven of Salem descendants. Well, “Supreme — for now,” Paulson says of her character. “I don’t know how long that’s going to last. And enjoyment is not possible at this particular juncture of the story.” Roberts reprises her role as Madison Montgomery, sharing that the director told her “to be bitchier, which I did not think was possible.” Apologizing for being so cryptic, Woodall summarizes the season without giving away much. “It’s a combination of new faces and new roles and old friends,” she says. “People will be scared. People will die.”
