Memorial Day 2014 TV programming

Memorial Day 2014 is Monday, May 26. On, and leading up to, that day honoring those who have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, various TV networks will feature a variety of programming and marathons. Some programming is dedicated to the spirit of the holiday, others are marathons and movies of other sorts, as networks realize some people have extra time off over the weekend.

Here is a list of notable Memorial Day 2014 TV programming. All times are ET.

TCM 72-Hour Memorial Day Weekend Marathon — Begins May 24 at 6am on TCM. Turner Classic Movies airs three days of movies about servicemen and women in times of war and peace, and in situations both dramatic and comedic. The marathon also includes touching stories of the families who wait at home while their loved ones are away. Thirty-four films range from the silent era (the World War I comedy-drama The Better ‘Ole from 1926) to the 1970s, with Clint Eastwood leading Kelly’s Heroes (1970). Other notable titles airing during the marathon include Sergeant York (1941); No Time for Sergeants (1958); The Best Years of Our Lives (1946); Twelve O’Clock High (1949); The Dirty Dozen (1967, pictured at top); Where Eagles Dare (1969); Objective, Burma! (1945); and plenty more.

Classic War Saturday — May 24 beginning at 6am on AMC. A day of war movies, including The Sands of Iwo Jima (1950); The Longest Day (1962); Heartbreak Ridge (1986); and more.

WWII in HD marathon — May 24 from 9am-7pm on History.

Pawn Stars marathon — May 24 at 7pm-May 25 at 4:02am; May 25 at 3pm-May 26 at 3:03am; May 26 at 10am-9pm on History.

Da Vinci’s Demons catch up marathon — May 24 beginning at 8pm on Starz. The four latest episodes of Da Vinci’s Demons will air back-to-back tonight. The entire second season will air back-to-back on May 31 at 12pm, leading up to the Season 2 finale.

Indianapolis 500 — May 25 at 11am (pre-race), 12pm race coverage starts, on ABC.

Bar Rescue marathon — May 25 at 11am-May 26 at 4am on Spike.

A Revolutionary Sunday — May 25 from 1:30pm-10pm on AMC. A marathon of the first several episodes of AMC’s new Revolutionary War drama Turn, leading into a new episode at 9pm.

SEC Baseball Championship — May 25 at 4:30pm on ESPN2.

National Memorial Day Concert 2014 — May 25, live at 8pm on PBS (repeats at 9:30pm). Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise cohost the 25th anniversary broadcast of this night of remembrance honoring the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, their families at home and all those who have given their lives for our country. The National Memorial Day Concert airs live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol before an audience of hundreds of thousands, millions at home, and to our troops around the world via American Forces Network.

World War II in Color marathon — May 26 from 2am-3pm on American Heroes Channel.

French Open Tennis — May 26 starting at 5am on ESPN2.

AMC War Heroes — May 26 beginning at 9am on AMC. Several hours of war films, including Windtalkers (2002); We Were Soldiers (2002); Pearl Harbor (2001); and more.

BBQ Pitmasters marathon — May 26 from 9am-10pm on Destination America.

Fast N’ Loud marathon — May 26 from 9am-9pm on Discovery Channel.

Falling Skies Season 3 marathon — May 26 from 10am-8pm on TNT. To get viewers keyed up for Falling Skies Season 4 (premiering June 22), TNT is airing a Season 3 marathon on Memorial Day.

Cops marathon — May 26 at 12pm-11:30pm on Spike.

Salute to Service marathon — May 26 from 12pm-9pm on Sportsman Channel. Gary Sinise hosts this marathon featuring programs with connections to those who serve and sacrifice.

MLB Holiday Game: Boston Red Sox vs. Atlanta Braves — May 26 at 1pm on ESPN.

The Haves and the Have Nots marathon — May 26 at 1pm-May 27 at 2am; May 27 at 1pm-May 28 at midnight (New episode airs May 27 at 9pm).

MLB Holiday Game: New York Yankees vs. St. Louis Cardinals — May 26 at 4pm on ESPN.

Brothers in War — May 26 at 7pm on NGC. Through gripping archival footage, including soldiers’ own home movies and personal audio tapes, this special recounts the harrowing combat experiences of the men of Charlie Company — one of the last American combat infantry companies to be drafted, trained and sent to fight together in Vietnam.

Chosin — May 26 at 9pm on American Heroes Channel (AHC). AHC’s new AHC Films initiative — creating a new outlet for independent non-fiction filmmakers looking for a TV home for their documentary projects — launches with the film Chosin. Chosin is a GI Film Festival Best Documentary Feature in 2010, and was also awarded Best Documentary Feature from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation in 2013. The film chronicles the Battle of Chosin, one of the early conflicts in the Korean War and known as one of the seminal skirmishes of the Marine Corps’ history. The brutal combat lasted 17 days in subfreezing temperatures during which 15,000 U.S. Marines clashed with 67,000 Chinese troops. This showing of the film has been reversioned to include new content throughout, including all-new interviews and introductions from filmmakers Brian Iglesias and Anton Sattler, who themselves served in the Marine Corps during the Iraq War.

The World Wars — May 26 at 9pm on History. Jeremy Renner narrates this three-night event series (airing May 26-28) that tells the story of three devastating decades of war from 1914-45. The stories are told through dramatic scenes, CGI, and contributors such as Sen. John McCain, Gen. Colin Powell, former British Prime Minister John Major and more.

Petals on the Wind — May 26 at 9pm on Lifetime. Based on the second gothic novel of the iconic V.C. Andrews series about the Dollanganger family, this original movies begins 10 years after the siblings have escaped the attic where the mother Corrine (Heather Graham) and grandmother Olivia (Ellen Burstyn) kept them locked away for more than two years.

Restrepo: Afghan Outpost — May 26 at 9pm on NGC. Restrepo is the feature-length film by award-winning photojournalist Tim Hetherington and journalist/author Sebastian Junger that chronicles the deployment of U.S. troops stationed at one of the most dangerous outposts in Afghanistan.

Bizarre Foods America Season 6 finale — May 26 at 9pm on Travel Channel.

BBQ Pit Wars — May 26 at 10pm on Destination America. A sneak peek, world-premiere of a new series that follows four noted BBQ teams competing against each other in BBQ creation.

  1. I see where you are having several War movies on during Memorial Day. I have Dish TV. What channel is this. I have Channel 21, but I did not see any war movies listed for Memorial day.

  2. I have been working on a song to help people who suffer from P.T.S.D. I finally have a campaign in place to fight this invisible wound and try get the song recorded so it will actually do some good.
