Shark Week 2013 is most-watched week in Discovery Channel history

Probably not too surprisingly, given the mega-ratings that the Megalodon special did for the network on the first night of Shark Week 2013, Discovery Channel has announced that Shark Week 2013 as a whole from Aug. 4-10 helped deliver the most-watched week (Aug. 5-11) in network history among Persons 18-49.

Discovery reports that Shark Week 2013 was the most-watched Shark Week in the 26-year history of that franchise. This was across all key demos, including Persons, Men and Women 25-54/18-49/18-34.

Even Discovery’s late-night talk show, Shark After Dark, was a program to beat last week. Discovery Channel says that Shark After Dark beat popular talk shows in the Persons 18-34 delivery Aug. 4-7. The program out-delivered every late-night cable talk show competitor, including The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (one episode of which found fill-in host John Oliver slamming Discovery for its fake Megalodon documentary that kicked off Shark Week), The Colbert Report, Conan, Watch What Happens Live and Chelsea Lately. Shark After Dark beat all of those cable shows among Persons 25-54 and 18-49 Sunday through Thursday, according to Discovery, citing Nielsen in their release.

Discovery Channel also points out that Shark Week 2013’s programming earned titles as highest-rated premieres in Shark Week history for their respective nights in Persons 18-49, including the controversial “mockumentary” Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives (Sunday); Voodoo Sharks (Monday); I Escaped Jaws (Tuesday); Great White Serial Killer (Wednesday); Alien Sharks (Thursday); and Great White Gauntlet (Friday). As we wrote about earlier, Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives also earned the highest rating for any Shark Week telecast ever. Discovery further mentions that Megalodon ranks as the No. 2 ad-supported cable telecast for 3Q13 among P/M 25-54 and M18-49 delivery (excluding sports), behind only the premiere of the final new Breaking Bad episodes this past Sunday.

Beyond TV ratings, Discovery adds that Shark Week 2013 was the network’s most social programming event to date, generating more than 2.6 million tweets from Aug. 4-10, and having 11 Worldwide and 15 U.S. Trending Topics on Twitter.

In other words, what all these numbers mean is that you should probably get ready for more Megalodon-type specials in Shark Weeks to come.
