World Cup qualifiers on Telemundo: Mexico vs Jamaica, and Mexico vs Panama

Telemundo will be broadcasting two World Cup qualifiers for the Mexican National Team as they hit the road, first going to Kingston to play Jamaica on June 4, then going to Panama for a second road test in three days on June 7.

Mexico vs Jamaica will air June 4 live at 8:30pm ET, and Mexico vs Panama will air June 7 live at 9pm ET, on Telemundo. These two matches are pivotal for Mexico’s qualification to the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Mexico vs Jamaica — Tuesday, June 4, 8:30pm ET on Telemundo

Mexico goes to Kingston on June 4 to play Jamaica, with Andrés Cantor calling the action for the Telemundo broadcast, alongside Sammy Sadovnik. Mexico will be taking on a Jamaican squad that is in must-win mode to keep its World Cup hopes alive. Meanwhile, Mexico heads into the match as the favorite, but needs a convincing win to get closer to one of the three direct spots awarded to CONCACAF teams.

The head-to-head stats for Mexico vs Jamaica matchups favor Mexico, which has a total of 18 wins, three draws and just one loss. However, the last time they met, in a qualifier in February of this year (pictured), the match ended in a 0-0 draw at Mexico’s own Estadio Azteca, while the last time the two teams played in Kingston, in 2008, Jamaica took a 1-0 victory.

UPDATE JUNE 6: Telemundo reports that the Mexico vs Jamaica match, in which Mexico defeated Jamaica 1-0, ranked as the No. 1 sporting event on television — broadcast or cable — regardless of language on June 4. The broadcast averaged 2,867,000 total viewers and 1,733,000 adults 18-49, according to Nielsen. The match also reached a cumulative audience of 5,731,000 viewers and 3,379,000 adults 18-49.

Mexico vs Panama — Friday, June 7, 9pm ET on Telemundo

Andrés Cantor and Sammy Sadovnik again have the call when Mexico vs Panama airs on Telemundo. As Panama hosts Mexico, its confidence is high, considering it is the surprising current leader of the Hexagonal. Julio Dely Valdés will make an appearance on the La Antesala pregame show as he reveals the key to success for Panama, and his keys to playing against Mexico. The pregame coverage will also include an interview by Deportes Telemundo reporter Francisco Cuevas with Blas Perez, Panama’s formidable goal-scorer and fan favorite. mun2 will have postgame coverage of the Mexico vs Panama match, including reactions and analysis.

UPDATE JUNE 11: Telemundo says that its coverage of the Mexico vs Panama World Cup Qualifier on June 7 was the No. 1 sporting event on television — broadcast or cable — regardless of language among adults 18-49 for that night, averaging 1,517,000 adults 18-49 (per Nielsen). It was the top-ranked telecast among total viewers in Los Angeles, Houston and San Francisco regardless of language in the time period. The match also ranked as the No. 1 program in Spanish-language television in Houston, Chicago, San Francisco and Phoenix.
