Animal Planet’s Monster Week 2013 includes a new “Mermaids” special

Animal Planet will again be airing Monster Week, an annual look at legendary and mysterious creatures through a weeklong broadcast of new episodes of popular series, as well as premiere specials. Monster Week 2013 will air May 20-27 on Animal Planet, and will feature 24 premiere hours of new specials, including a follow-up special to last year’s hit Mermaids: The Body Found, called Mermaids: The New Evidence.

Mermaids: The New Evidence premieres on Animal Planet May 26 at 10pm ET/PT (following a two-hour airing of Mermaids: The Body Found The Extended Cut at 8pm ET/PT). In Mermaids: The New Evidence, Dr. Paul Robertson, the former NOAA scientist who led last year’s investigation, and journalist Jon Frankel further probe the story and reveal new evidence for mermaids that they claim has only come forward in the past year. So it sounds like the government might have to make a statement following this special once again, as it did last year, when it received questions from viewers about whether mermaids were discovered and are being kept somewhere.

Mermaids: The New Evidence comes at the tail end of Monster Week 2013, which concludes with the finale of River Monsters Season 5, airing May 27 at 8pm ET/PT. Called “Legend of Loch Ness” and running two hours, the River Monsters Season 5 finale finds host Jeremy Wade going in search of the fabled Loch Ness Monster.

Also of note during Monster Week 2013 is the network premiere of Monster Squid: It Lives, debuting on Animal Planet May 21 at 8pm ET/PT. This special was a hit for Discovery Channel, and chronicles filmmakers’ and scientists’ efforts to go in search of a real monster — the giant squid — and capture it live on film, in its natural environment, for the first time. First-ever footage of the giant squid in its habitat is featured in the special, and it is stunning.

In addition to these and other programs airing on television during Monster Week 2013, Animal Planet LIVE, a 24/7 digital destination, will be offering Piranha Cam, featuring the freshwater fish known for their sharp teeth and omnivorous appetite. Visitors to the Piranha Cam can watch these creatures from the safety of their living rooms, laptops, smartphones or tablets by tuning in for regularly scheduled feeding frenzies.

  1. If they are real..LEAVE THEM ALONE in their own world. We DO NOT need to torture, examine and explain everything on earth..somethings are better off left alone to the heavens..I believe there are other cultures..let’s let them live in peace.

  2. Lol … obviously they hafto re make the show about mermaids etc, not like they can get the mermaids to act on film.. lmao.. oh man.

  3. I do NOT believe any of this…all looked cgi to me…However, if by some chance these creatures did exist…we (the humans) must LEAVE THEM ALONE!! Let them live in their world in peace…again..not that I believe this story at all…looked so fake….

  4. I was surprised to see both the original and the new one listed last night, so of course I had to watch them, given I just released The Mermaid of Redwood Cove on Amazon, a fictional novella that includes these creatures.

Do I believe they are real? I don’t know. If they are, we should definitely not intrude unnecessarily.

  5. I did not believe until the footage the scientists in the underwater capsule captured. I am now a believer who believes they need to never be found and exposed. Let them live their lives in their world.

  6. Wow. I cannot say how deeply disappointed I am about this broadcast. I truley was intrigued by the first episode, and maybe even more so due to the fact of having been straight from Washington state. I have been looking so forward to watching this episode for over a month, and all i saw, were computer animated videos….INCLUDING the one submitted by the boys with the cellphone video, that was clearly posted as a reinactivment of the original footage in the first episode, and was interpreted as the actual footage in the “new evidence” episode. Again….so very dissapointing.

  7. Im sitting here watching the show right now, ijust want to say how much of a tool jon is. I mean honestly you can tellhe doesnt belive even a little bit. The media isnt suppost to care or show those feelings but you can see how pissed off dr. Robertson is.
