Albert Pujols, C.J. Wilson, Los Angeles Angels

When it came to offseason dealing in Major League Baseball, the Los Angeles Angels were on a celestial plane. The Angels landed baseball’s biggest free-agent prize, first baseman Albert Pujols, at the price of $240 million for 10 years. They also made their pitching rotation among the best in baseball by signing C.J. Wilson (five years, $77.5 million). Other big names on the move included first baseman Prince Fielder to the Tigers, shortstop Jose Reyes to the Marlins, closer Jonathan Papelbon to the Phillies and Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish signing with the Rangers. Here are a few more developments to keep an eye on as MLB opens a new season:
New Managers Bobby Valentine leaves the ESPN booth and returns to the majors as the new Red Sox skip. Other managers with new teams are Robin Ventura (White Sox), Ozzie Guillen (Marlins), Mike Matheny (Cardinals) and Dale Sveum (Cubs).
Fish Story The Marlins have a new name (Miami Marlins), a new stadium (retractable-roofed Marlins Park), new uniforms (ugly), a new manager (Guillen), a slew of new players and hopefully renewed fan interest this season. They’ll also be the featured team on the second season of Showtime’s The Franchise reality series. The new-look Marlins open the 2012 season April 4 vs. the World Series champion Cardinals.
Playoff Expansion After much debate, MLB is implementing an expanded 10-team playoff system in 2012. The new system adds another wild-card team to each league, with a one-game playoff to determine which team advances to the Division Series. MLB hopes to manufacture the excitement that happened on its own last year when eight games impacting the playoffs were played on the regular season’s final day.
MLB on TV ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball returns with former Red Sox manager Terry Francona replacing Valentine as an analyst. FOX’s Saturday Baseball Game of the Week regional games return April 7, and will have eight straight weeks of games in prime time beginning May 19. TBS airs Sunday afternoon games beginning with Yankees at Rays on April 8. MLB Network airs 30 live games during the first month of the season.
