“The Office” Recap: Cafe Disco

Michael still has the lease for the Michael Scott Paper Company office, which he has been using as a venue for dancing and drinking coffee. (Like Nuts and Gum, together at last!) Since no one will go out to lunch with him, he invites the entire office to his Cafe Disco and entices them will the knowledge that he, and occasionally Erin, will be there. That doesn’t work, so he starts pumping “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” by C+C Music Factory through the air conditioner vents. Phyllis takes the bait, and within seconds of dancing with Michael she mangles her back. Defeated, Michael shuts down Cafe Disco — or so he thinks. Instead of unplugging the coffee machine as Michael instructed, Erin pumps up the jam, and she and Kelly are soon dancing to a song called “Boy Hangover” (which can be found here). Two Vance Refrigeration employees join them, and soon Cafe Disco turns into the hottest daytime disco on the ground floor of an industrial office building on the planet. Even Phyllis is able to make it back to the dance floor, after receiving miracle back treatment from Dwight.

While all of this is going on, Jim and Pam are planning a trip to Youngstown, Ohio — to get married, privately and secretly. They tell Michael that they need to leave the office early to meet a contractor, and don’t even crack when Dwight finds directions to Youngstown on the printer and surveys the office to see who’s going to the courthouse. Before they head out, they stop down at Cafe Disco, where the cheesiness of dancing to “Y.M.C.A.” with all their friends convinces them to forgo their plans to elope in favor of a more traditional wedding.

Mike says

Best Moment: Every second of the Kelly and Andy dance-off, which may or may not have actually occurred.

Best Quote: “My grandfather was told that Diamond Dancer would never race again. They were wrong. He came in ninth in the Apple Creek Derby. And his jerky came in third the following year. A majestic beast. So fast. So tender.” — Dwight, explaining how back treatment techniques have been passed down from generation to generation in the Shrute family

Employee of the Week: Creed. He sacrificed his ability to see drivers behind him so that Cafe Disco could have his mini novelty mirrorball.

Ryan says

Best Moment: Erin being able to produce her birth certificate upon request.

Best Quote: “Funk is the problem, and the solution.” — Michael

Employee of the Week: Kevin. He respects the lei. And he scored at Cafe Disco.

Best Moment: You’d think nothing that Creed would do anymore would make us rewind our DVRs to see if we saw what we thought we just saw. Yet, when Creed walked out of the bathroom, eating a chicken wing, I did just that.

Best Quote: “You all took a life, here. The life of the party.” — Michael Scott on the killers … party killers, that is.

Employee of the Week: Erin. She’s down for anything, it appears. Delivering lines for Dwight. Drinking espressos with Michael (I’m guessing she likes them extra dry). Inviting outside friends to an office dance party. Every office needs an Erin.
