Getting Lost: The Top 10 Things We Love About This Season

Here they are, in no particular order, the 10 things we have enjoyed most about the current season of Lost — one which we feel will go down as not only the best in the series’ history, but one of the best in television history, as well. Yeah, it’s been that good.

1. The new characters. While in the past we’ve been subjected to pointless additions to the cast (Nikki and Paulo, we’re looking in your direction), this season’s newcomers have played vital roles in the overall story arc and have quickly become integral to our enjoyment of the series. Daniel Faraday, Miles Straume, Matthew Abaddon and Martin Keamy, in particular, have quickly become favorites of ours.

2.
Desmond and Penny’s phone call during “The Constant.” We’re not much for mushy stuff, but this was one powerful scene. We just hope Desmond makes it off the freighter and that this wasn’t the last conversation he and Penny will ever have.

3. Flash-forwards and time travel. What could have been a gimmicky knock-off of Back to the Future has turned into a plot device that, one could argue, brought fans back from the ledge they almost jumped off of after a so-so third season. Only on Lost could you actually tell us what’s going to happen in the future, and not only does it not spoil the outcome, but it fosters further intrigue.
4. The Oceanic 6 return home. Seriously, isn’t this the moment we’ve waited four seasons for? It began as a question of will anyone ever get off this island — became who will get off the island — then how will they get off the island? And in typical Lost fashion, the return of the Oceanic 6 to the mainland only raises more questions. We love it.

5. Return of the living dead … characters. Death is not the end of the line if you’re a character from Lost. Just ask Christian Shephard and Charlie. Dead, they still have more combined screen time than Bernard and Rose this season. We can only hope this means a return visit from Eko. We’re kinda ruling out the return of Arzt, however.

6. The return of Richard Alpert’s guyliner. So what gives? We’ve seen Alpert in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 90s, and in the present, yet he never ages. The secret to his youthful appearance? Guyliner. And fierce amounts of it.

7. Any scene that involves Locke, Ben, Widmore and/or Abaddon. When these guys arrive on the screen, we know to pay extra close attention — either because something important is going to happen or because the scene is going to be damn good. We’d also put Claire on this list, too, but for different reasons. What can we say? We’re guys.

8. “The Other Woman.” If you had told us that a Season 4 episode of Lost was going to share a title with a Ray Parker Jr. song, we would have assumed it was going to be “Ghostbusters” — not only because it’s the only Ray Parker Jr. song most people know, but because the island actually has its own ghostbuster — Miles. We’re grateful for the joke fodder and we’re sorry for going to the well so often. We’re done now. We promise.

9. Tom’s off-island “indulgence.” Tom’s way of coming out to Michael was a moment of levity in what was a pretty dark episode. Plus, it’s nice to know that the Others have lives outside of kidnapping and building runways.

10. Beards: They grow on you! This season has been a beardiful season for the follicled fellas on the island. Sayid and Desmond have long since committed to the look. Sawyer and Jack prefer the half-beard. But Season 4 brought the emergence of Michael’s long journey from goatee to beard, as well as new characters Pilot Frank and Daniel Faraday, who rock enough facial fur to make Grizzly Adams proud.
