John Wesley Shipp on passing the Flash torch and playing Henry Allen

John Wesley Shipp can feel his career coming full circle in many ways thanks in large part to the popularity of The Flash. Before there was a hit CW show, the veteran actor played the title role of the speedy crime-fighter in the short-lived 1990s series on CBS. Shipp has relived old memories and gained a ton of new ones portraying Barry Allen’s father Henry on the modern-day The Flash. When rumblings of the new show began, he was ecstatic. “It was about time,” Shipp said, gearing up for the Magic City Comic Con Jan. 15-17 at the Miami Airport […]

The Flash Season 2 premiere recap: “The Man Who Saved Central City”

As The Flash Season 2 kicked off (following a quick overview of what happened last season), we find it is 6 months after the Singularity, and we can assume that Barry (Grant Gustin), as The Flash, is, indeed, as the title of this episode indicates, The Man Who Saved Central City. We learn that the city is holding a Flash Day in honor of the hero who saved them, but as Barry has flashbacks throughout the episode, we learn at what cost it came, as Ronnie (Robbie Amell) and Eddie (Rick Cosnett) both appeared to perish during the battle to stop Wells […]

“The Flash” recap: Things get explosive in “Plastique”

I’m not sure if The CW purposely scheduled the “Plastique” episode of The Flash to air on Veterans Day or not, but either way, it was timely, in that its main story dealt with the mistreatment of a military veteran who ends up as a metahuman capable of blowing things up merely by touching them. Her backstory touches on the way she has been used in the past, and in her current story she is pursued by the military to be used again, this time as a new weapon. Also in the episode, Barry (Grant Gustin) and Iris (Candice Patton) […]

The Flash recap: Captain Cold is introduced in “Going Rogue”

In last night’s episode of The Flash, titled “Going Rogue,” we finally get to see one of the “big bads” of the Flash mythos — Captain Cold (a.k.a. Leonard Snart), played very well by Wentworth Miller. Miller displayed the cool-under-pressure sinisterness of Captain Cold that fans of the villain’s appearance in comics and in animated versions should appreciate. The episode title is also likely a sly reference to The Rogues, a group of villains in the comics headed by Captain Cold who regularly tried to stop The Flash. The end of this episode also saw Captain Cold trying to recruit […]

The Flash recap: “Things You Can’t Outrun”

Episode 3 of The CW’s The Flash is titled “Things You Can’t Outrun,” and that applies both literally to Barry’s (Grant Gustin) troubles in outrunning a dangerous new metahuman villain, and also figuratively to various characters’ inability to outrun their pasts. The baddie for this week is Kyle Nimbus (guest star Anthony Carrigan), who has the ability to turn himself into poison gas (and, of course, resolidify himself afterward). Nimbus got this power as a death row inmate the night of the particle accelerator accident — as Nimbus was being put to death by gas, the accident that also created […]

The Flash recap: “Fastest Man Alive”

In episode 2 of the first season of The CW’s The Flash, called “Fastest Man Alive,” we are a few weeks into Barry Allen’s (Grant Gustin) new life as, well, the fastest man alive, following his transformation into a “metahuman” after being struck by lightning during the breakdown of Dr. Wells’ (Tom Cavanagh) particle accelerator. We also learn more of the history, and likely future, of the relationship between Barry and Joe, find out that Iris is becoming more intrigued by the unidentified and very speedy new hero of Central City, and are introduced to the foe eventually known as […]

“The Flash” is another enjoyable DC Comics adaptation for The CW

DC Comics may still be trying to catch up with Marvel on the big screen, but when it comes to TV series, it is leading the way. Along with The CW’s current series Arrow and FOX’s new Gotham, as well as the long run of the former CW series Smallville, DC seems to have had a better sense of how to translate its classic creations to the small screen rather than in feature films at this point (though I’m sure they are hoping the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will change that), and that continues with the new […]

TCA: CW’s “The Flash” is “probably the most faithful DC Comics adaptation ever”

At the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour today, The CW presented its latest DC Comics adaptation, The Flash, and it’s a winner, chronicling the adventures of forensic scientist Barry Allen (Grant Gustin), who, through one of those mysterious sci-fi accidents that can only happen in comic books, is transformed into the fastest human alive. From executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, the men behind the network’s hit Arrow, the new series is, in the words of DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, who was also on the panel: “probably the most faithful DC Comics adaptation ever, as deep […]
