Face Off Season 10 episode 4 recap: Covert Characters

Agents Face Off Season 10 episode 4

Face Off Season 10 episode 4 starts with using the new little deck off the workroom. Is this a replacement for the mansion? Did they not get to live in the mansion this season? Did the neighbors complain? I have many questions. On to the challenge – McKenzie has taken over the workroom for the artists’ first individual focus challenge (Two days instead of three, mwahaha). The artists must create a realistic disguise for their model, making them virtually unrecognizable. We learn that apparently Michael Westmore has created disguises for celebrities (like Michael Jackson) and for the police. He created … Continue reading

Face Off Season 10 episode 3 recap: Lost Languages

Kaleb Mel makeup Face Off Season 10 episode 3

Moving right along to the Face Off Season 10 episode 3 recap. In this episode we’re dealing with lost languages and what the speakers of those languages might have looked like. We’re introduced to David Peterson, a professional language creator. How cool is that job title? David has created languages for the Face Off artists. Again, they will be working in pairs (which they get to choose themselves this time). Each team has to go into a ‘shrine’ to pick an artifact which represents an ancient tribe. That artifact corresponds with a language sketch. This week’s pairs: Njoroge & Ant … Continue reading

Jason Ralph and Stella Maeve help conjure up Syfy’s “The Magicians”

Jason Ralph and Stella Maeve help conjure up Syfy's "The Magicians"

While those unfamiliar with the books may dismiss Lev Grossman’s bestselling fantasy trilogy, The Magicians, as “Harry Potter for adults,” those who have become obsessed with the works know otherwise. And they should be pleased with Syfy’s series adaptation of the books, which begins Jan. 25. The concept of the series does sound Harry Potter-esque — it is set at Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy, a secret upstate New York university specializing in magic. Here, Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) and other 20-somethings soon discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real, and poses grave danger to humanity. … Continue reading

objects Face Off Season 10 episode 2

Welcome to the Face Off Season 10 episode 2 recap! Last week Greg got the boot, and Melissa got the win. This week, we’re still working in teams, which makes my life as a recapper easier. Thanks Face Off! Quote of the week: at The Culver Studios, someone says “This does feel like a studio.” Um, cause it is? Ve joins McKenzie to let the artists know what this week’s spotlight challenge is. If you read our questions with the judges, this is the challenge Ve and McKenzie liked best. They need to create a larger-than-life whimsical larger-than-life character inspired … Continue reading

Face Off Judges tell us their Favorite Challenge from Season 10

Glenn Hetrick

In anticipation for Season 10, we asked the Face Off judges – Glenn Hetrick, Ve Neill and Neville Page, along with host McKenzie Westmore – two important questions. The marathon will only be interrupted for a telecast of WWE SmackDown on Thursday, … Continue reading

Childhood’s End screenwriter talks about the Syfy adaptation

Childhood's End screenwriter talks about the Syfy adaptation

Along with debuting its new series The Expanse on Dec. 14, Syfy also premieres its stunning new miniseries Childhood’s End. In adapting Arthur C. Clarke’s (2001: A Space Odyssey) seminal science-fiction novel, Syfy perhaps fulfills the calling of the original Sci-Fi Channel, and is in line with the channel’s goal of becoming “the destination for the smartest, most provocative [genre dramas],” as Syfy president Dave Howe told Entertainment Weekly last year. Based on what we’ve seen, Childhood’s End should indeed be provocative. The story follows the peaceful invasion of Earth by alien “Overlords,” who promise to eliminate poverty, war and … Continue reading

Syfy’s “The Expanse” combines old-school space opera and sleek, modern sci fi

Syfy's "The Expanse" combines old-school space opera and sleek, modern sci fi

Syfy is billing The Expanse as the most ambitious series in its history, and from what we’ve seen, that shows. It has a look and feel that combines good old space opera with sleek science fiction, reminding us of Guardians of the Galaxy at times in its fun yet thrilling depiction of a future that — despite being set 200 years away from our time, when humanity has colonized the solar system — still has a lived-in look. There’s nothing tidy about this future, or its characters, especially rogue ship’s captain Jim Holden (Steven Strait, pictured). “We have the technology … Continue reading
