“Black Ops” makes tactical move on Military Channel

They work in secrecy, but their exploits are legendary. Around the world, elite special operations units — “black ops” — carry out high-risk missions with little or no recognition. In a new series on Military Channel, premiering tonight and airing Wednesdays at 10pm ET/PT, these operatives get a bit of their due as Black Ops reveals the inside stories of some of recent history’s most dramatic military actions. And no, they’re not all American missions: “City Under Siege” (Oct. 10) Mumbai, 2008. In a siege of terrorist attacks, more than 170 people were killed in shootings or bomb blasts across […]

“History Exposed” Military Channel’s latest offering

Years ago, when History was still The History Channel, a lot of people came to call it The Hitler Channel because seemingly every time you turned it on, that little guy with the mustache or his minions were there, bringing devastation to Europe and the rest of the world. That has changed as History has abandoned a good deal of its former mission and left such frequent examination of World War II events to others — like Military Channel, which jumps into the deep well of information about that particular conflict in its new series History Exposed, premiering Thursday, Sept. […]

Military Channel unveiling “Narrow Escapes of WWII”

Most World War II history buffs know about the so-called “Great Escape” as lionized in the film starring Steve McQueen, but war is full of escapes, both great and narrow — and it’s the latter that are getting their time in the sun with Military Channel’s Narrow Escapes of WWII premiering May 15 at 10pm ET/PT. The series honors the generals and troops both on the line and in the rear echelon who, through brilliant tactical maneuvers, selfless heroism and in spite of terrible odds, carried out missions that saved hundreds of thousands of innocent lives — and who lived […]

“World War I in Colour” coming to Military Channel

It’s a growing trend and a source of fascination for history buffs. Seeing footage of historic eras and events that we’re used to seeing only in black and white, but in color, or upgraded to HD. And, as fate would have it, some of the films built around this footage have been vivid and excellent regardless of the color factor. Documentaries about the Russian Revolution and, more recently, World War II featuring color and colorized images bring an immediacy to events that usually seem distant in part because of the antiquated media on which they often were captured. To that end, Military Channel […]

Military Channel to engage audiences with “Combat Tech”

As impressive and fascinating as military technology can be, the stories that drive the innovations are often just as compelling. The interplay between history and technology is at the heart of Military Channel’s new series Combat Tech, premiering tomorrow night. I talked with John Terp, executive producer of the show, to find out more. “Technology genres and history genres — they’re almost always treated as two separate entities,” Terp explains. “Where technology shows are all about the whiz-bang, marveling at cool technologies, the historical shows are the story of what happened in the past. I think what we’ve done — […]

“Nazi Collaborators” coming to Military Channel

In the last decade or two, much of American television has had its roots in series that launched in Britain, and we’ve certainly imported our share of UK series for broadcast here. But rarely do we import something this potentially incendiary. Oct. 4, Military Channel will premiere the 13-part series Nazi Collaborators, exploring the unsettling and often unasked questions of how thousands of non-Germans could have chosen to collaborate with the Nazis. The answers are varied and often as controversial as the questions. Hindsight is always 20/20, of course, which the makers of Nazi Collaborators obviously know full well. In […]
