After 2.4 million viewers tuned in for the Season 1 finale of History’s survival series Alone (a growth of 50 percent over the series premiere), it was probably a no-brainer that the network’s No. 1 new non-fiction series of 2015 would be back for a second season. And so it is, with Alone Season 2 debuting April 21 at 9pm ET/PT. History says that the 13-episode season puts 10 hardcore survivalists alone on northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia. The contestants have one mission — to stay alive. No camera crews, no teams and no gimmicks are on hand, per the network. But a $500,000 … Continue reading
It’s always nice to see when a network gets back to its original mission — and its name — and History has been doing a fine job of that of late. For history buffs, miniseries like Texas Rising have helped complement other series like Pawn Stars, and the new series Join or Die With Craig Ferguson should also be a welcome addition for those who like to discuss, and debate, history. The series is the brainchild of former late-night host Craig Ferguson, and will feature a roundtable of people talking about six historical events or figures, whittling them down to … Continue reading
Leo Tolstoy’s epic novel War and Peace always seemed like one of those books that people like to claim to have read but may not have actually done so, mainly given its formidable size, clocking in at well over 1,000 pages. If you fall into this category, you’re in luck, as a BBC adaptation of the novel — airing in the United States across the A&E, History and Lifetime networks — condenses the story into its main elements and delivers a strong costume drama the likes of which used to be featured regularly on A&E and History. (Whether or not … Continue reading
Every since they were kids Rick and Marty Lagina have shared an insatiable desire (Rick a little more than Marty) to solve the mystery surrounding Oak Island, a 140-acre island off the coast of Nova Scotia believed to be the resting place of ancient treasures dating back to the Knights Templar (some even believe the Ark of the Covenant is located there). The legends about deadly curses and glorious treasures have fascinated explorers for over 200 years. It’s been a maddening process but they are determined to see it through. We recently talked to the lovable Lagina brothers (Marty is … Continue reading
If you were alone — REALLY alone — in the wilderness, what do you think would do you in first? The wild, predatory animals? The harsh terrain? Or the unfathomable loneliness that can only come from being totally cut-off from all of humanity? (I want to say the loneliness would get me, but I’m pretty sure I’d be mauled by a black bear before I had the chance to pine for human contact. But then again, I’m no survivalist. Thank goodness the contenders on Alone are, or this series would be done after day one.) Tonight at 10pm ET/PT (9pm … Continue reading
The enormity of the talent involved in History’s exhilarating new historical drama, Texas Rising, was more than evident as Bill Paxton, Olivier Martinez, Ray Liotta, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Roland Joffé walked into a hotel cottage in Pasadena earlier this year to talk to us about the 10-hour event series. It’s truly the TV event of the year with an emotionally riveting story and a cast list that extends beyond the aforementioned, which includes Brendan Fraser, Thomas Jane, Christopher McDonald, Jeremy Davies, Chad Michael Murray, Max Thieriot, Robert Knepper, Rhys Coiro, Crispin Glover, Jeff Fahey, Rob Morrow, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Trevor … Continue reading
Former Army Ranger and decorated Air Force para-rescue specialist Wil Willis, who previously gained fame on TV through the series Special Ops Mission and Triggers on the former Military Channel, will return in a new competition series debuting this summer on History. Called Forged in Fire, the program will feature world-class bladesmiths re-creating many of history’s most iconic edged weapons, from the Japanese katana to the medieval broadsword and ancient throwing blades like the Chakram. History’s upcoming miniseries Texas Rising — premiering on Memorial Day — will also include a soundtrack album featuring new music from legendary performers such as George Strait (who performs the title song “Take Me to Texas”; new tracks from Jose Feliciano; and a new cover of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down,” performed by series costar Kris Kristofferson (pictured below as Andrew Jackson with costar Olivier Martinez as Santa Anna). Today, History released a music video for Kristofferson’s rendition of “I Won’t Back Down,” a fitting tune considering that the series details what followed the battle at the Alamo for the fight for … Continue reading
