Tonight is Hollywood’s most anticipated night. When the dreams of a handful come true and for the rest, “It was an honor just to be nominated.”
Here’s a rundown of the night’s most buzzworthy events and a list of winners that I’ll update as the night goes on.

The opening montage showed clips from best, most explosive and most quotable cinematic moments from the past year. Then, Chris Rock opened the 88th Annual Academy Awards broadcast with a scathing commentary about the awards’ failure to nominate African American artists. The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite trended all night long and the comedian quipped, “I counted at least 15 black people in the montage!” Members of Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences settled back for a well-deserved tongue-lashing. “I’m here at the Academy Awards,” joked Rock, “otherwise known as ‘The White People’s Choice Awards.’”

He mentioned that he was encouraged to boycott the night. “How come it’s only unemployed people telling you to quit?” The comedian joked that if he had boycotted the night, they would have given the hosting gig to Kevin Hart. As Hart giggled from a prime seat in the audience, Rock said, “Kev makes movies fast. Every month. Porno stars don’t make movies that fast.”

Rock also poked fun at people who showed their displeasure by boycotting. Jada Pinkett Smith was on the receiving end of many of Rock’s barbs. Rock noted that she’s currently on a TV show and without her film-star husband, she wouldn’t have been invited anyway.

“There is no reason to have ‘men’ and ‘women’ categories in acting,” he continued. “It’s not track and field; you don’t need to separate them. Robert De Niro’s never said, ‘I’m gonna have to slow this acting down so Meryl Streep could catch up.’”

“We want opportunity,” said Rock. “We want black actors getting the same opportunities. Not just one. Leo gets a great part every year … you guys get great parts every years. What about Jamie Foxx?”

Rock ended, “You want diversity? We got diversity, Please welcome Emily Blunt and somebody whiter, Charlize Theron!”

The order of this year’s awards will reflect the movie-making process, so writing awards were presented first. I will post the awards in reverse order, so the most recently presented award will be at the top of the page.
