Supergirl Season 1 Episode 8 Recap: Hostile Takeover

The Kryptonian family feud comes to a head on the Supergirl midseason finale.

Having escaped Astra and returned to the DEO — where Alex tells her to rust Hank Henshaw and let them handle Kara’s aunt — Kara discovers Astra hovering over CatCo. The two go to battle. But during each of their encounters you get a sense of just how close the two were, especially during flashbacks to when Kara was a little girl. They fight, but exhibit restraint when each is in a vulnerable position. There is — or was — love between them.

Supergirl eventually captures Astra and takes her to the DEO. We find out Astra and her husband, Non, were like demented Planeteers who had ways they felt could save Krypton from ecological destruction. Problem was, their ideas were extreme and went against the law. It’s why Kara’s mom (and Astra’s sister) Alura sent them to Fort Rozz.

Astra tells Kara that Alura used her to bring Astra out of hiding. Kara doesn’t believe it — until she gets confirmation by Alura’s hologram. The explanation is a hard pill for Kara to swallow, and when Hank and Alex look at past confrontations between Supergirl and Astra, they find out Astra basically wanted to be taken in by Supergirl. She was a distraction for what was to come.

As if Kara doesn’t have enough on her plate, she also has to help Cat Grant again. This time, the CatCo head was the victim of a hack. Kara works with Winn and Jimmy to locate any information about Cat’s past could damage her career. Through the investigation, Kara sees records of Cat making payments into a personal account for an Adam Foster. He ends up being Cat’s son.

Not wanting to bring him into the spotlight, Cat is ready to step down. Kara knows Dirk Armstrong, chairman of the board for the company, was responsible for getting someone to hack Cat’s computer, with plans to take over. Jimmy puts a bug on Dirk’s computer, and Winn is able to acquire e-mails to confirm he is guilty. Working together brings Winn and Jimmy closer as friends. Jimmy can see Winn likes Kara and calls him out on it. Jimmy says he isn’t in Winn’s way and if he has feelings for her, he should tell her. Winn lacks confidence.

Romance is the last thing on Kara’s mind. Atop everything else, Cat recaps what has transpired recently and concludes that Kara is, indeed, Supergirl. Further proof comes after she asks Kara to take off her glasses. Her boss can see it in Kara’s eyes. Before she can offer any real response, Kara is alerted by Alex that while the focus has been on Astra, there is an attack on Lord Technologies. Non and other Fort Rozz inmates come in contact with Maxwell Lord. Supergirl arrives and the episode only teases what’s going to happen when our heroine collides with Non.

This half of the season really set the table for what’s to come. We are left with more questions in regards to Kara’s past. She also has to deal with not only an alien invasion, but the fact the boss at her day job knows about her night job. Then there’s Adam Foster. And let’s not forget about Hank. How long until Kara finds out he is the Martian Manhunter?
