Empire Season 2 Episode 4 Recap: Alas, poor Vernon …

Empire fans know here’s no doubt that Lucious has had his share of trouble with the law.

But since he was able to get out of jail, thanks to his new crooked lawyer, Thirsty, I guess you could say that I was just a bit surprised to see an FBI squad rush into Empire and demolish Lucious’ office. Jamal tried stopping them but hey, they’re the FBI and when they have a search warrant, they can do whatever makes them happy. Like start this episode of Empire off with a bang!

Just as Anika starts to get on Cookie’s good side by showing her what’s going on at Empire, the FBI storms into Lyon Dynasty, too. Oh no you did NOT just force your way into Cookie’s den! It’s clear that something big is about to go down, but instead of worrying about the FBI, Lucious seems to think this gives Empire some real OG street cred. Sure, we can call it that.

Thirsty advises that everyone try to stick together, the FBI is only trying to scare them by opening up another investigation. Since he doesn’t play by the rules, Thirsty also lets everyone know that their next objective is to find Vernon and make sure he doesn’t testify. Would Andre like to step forward and explain how that might be complicated? I guess they don’t have to worry about Vernon ever testifying. I’m shocked that Andre didn’t spill the beans by exploding once Thirsty mentioned his name. Like father, like son.

EMP204-Lucious-AndreLucious meets with Andre to let him know that he wants to be a part of the baby’s life, (even after his reaction last episode). He tells Andre that while he may not have been the best father, he wants to be the best grandfather. A quick flashback into Lucious’ past makes it look like he was going to be taken away from his own mother by child services. Now I can see why Lucious would want to make things right by being there for his grandchild.

Andre then brings up the topic of the new FBI investigation. He asks his father if he’d be allowed back into Empire if he could find a way to make all of it go away. Not knowing what’s already happened, Lucious tells Andre that he could have whatever he wanted if he made that happen. He knows he can’t go back to Empire while being in jail, right?

EMPIRE SEASON 2 RECAPS: Episode 1 | Episode 2 | Episode 3

Hakeem comes up with the idea to make a huge music video with Jamal in order to promote the music he leaked and to show that he’s trying to work with Empire. While on break from filming, Cookie steps outside. All of a sudden the NYPD shows up and arrests her because she has an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court. In Cookie’s words, “that’s some bull!”

Oh. Looks like Porsha will be looking for a new job once Cookie gets out of police custody. It’s her fault that Cookie has a warrant out for her arrest. Why in the world would Porsha give police Cookie’s name for jumping over a turnstile?

Andre tells Rhonda that he needs to dig up Vernon’s body in order to make things righEMP204-Cookiet with him and his father. He also tells her that God has been speaking to him and wants both him and Hakeem to run Empire. Yeah. He’s definitely off his rocker. Either way, Rhonda is Andre’s ride-or-die and goes with him to dig up the body. How sweet that they’re doing some intense couples therapy bonding.

Cookie ends up telling Roxanne Ford all that she knows about Lucious’ connection with Bunkie’s murder. She lets Ford know that she heard Lucious and Bunkie arguing about a radio station deal. Bunkie didn’t want Lucious to move forward with the deal and the next thing you know, Bunkie turns up dead. Soon after Lucious gets out of prison, he makes the deal that Bunkie didn’t want him to. Of course Ford is loving this new information because it ties Lucious to the murder.

Andre didn’t think it would be as easy as digging a hole and finding Vernon’s body, right? Wrong. Only after digging a massive hole did Rhonda notice that all the trees had the same hole marking on them. Tip: If you’re going to burry a body, make sure you have a solid landmark. Andre doesn’t want to stop digging, so he and Rhonda dig a few more holes. Just before the sun rises, a car pulls up next to them. Two people get out of the car and direct the couple to come out with their hands raised.

Well would you look what the cat dragged in — it’s Lucious and Thirsty. Lucious had Thirsty track Andre ever since they had that strange conversation, and Lucious was indeed correct on his son having something to do with Vernon. Rhonda explains what happened and Lucious couldn’t be more grateful and proud for the two saving his life. Thirsty uses his weird contraption to locate Vernon’s body. It’s as easy as one, two, three, kids!

EMP204-Music-VideoAfter fighting with his brother on set, Hakeem finds himself alone at the bar. Lucky for him, a performer (Jamila Velazquez) takes the stage and she might be just the girl he’s been looking for. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Valentina’s voice, but she’s a trader. Hakeem has no idea what the girl is singing about because she’s singing in Spanish and already he’s wanting to sign her for his girl group. Tip number two: learn how to sing in Spanish if you want to wow people. Hakeem, you need to sign this girl now!

If you were wondering what Lucious was going to do with Vernon’s body, he had a plan: When Roxanne Ford hopped into her car, she wasn’t expecting to have a passenger. Oh yeah, Lucious planted Vernon’s dead decaying body in Ford’s passenger side seat. That will teach her to mess with Lucious Lyon, right?

What were your thoughts on tonight’s episode of Empire? Do you think Ford will be able to pin anything against Lucious now that she has Cookie’s confession? Was putting Vernon’s body in her car a smart idea? Will Hakeem and Jamal work things out? I couldn’t believe how violent they got towards each other. Is this new singer going to be the answer for Lyon Dynasty? Let’s just hope Hakeem doesn’t mess this one up like he did the last time. Now that Lucious knows about Andre’s secret, will he allow Andre to come back to work for Empire? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

New episodes of Empire premiere Wednesday nights at 9/8CT on FOX.

  1. Jamila Velazquez had a gorgeous voice. I’d like to hear more from her. I was impressed enough with her to search online and find out who she was.
