Tom Brokaw to discuss his cancer battle on NBC’s “Dateline”

tom-brokawIn a special edition of NBC’s Dateline, veteran newsman Tom Brokaw will open up for the first time on primetime television about his journey battling cancer, and his new memoir, A Lucky Life, Interrupted, which will be released in the U.S. on May 12. Based on that book title, the Dateline episode, airing May 7, is called “Tom Brokaw: A Lucky Life Interrupted.”

More from NBC:

“From the revelation that he had multiple myeloma in 2013, a treatable but incurable blood cancer, to his doctor visits and treatments, Brokaw chronicles his difficult, and ultimately rewarding, road to remission. Brokaw also details the serious setbacks and challenges he faced, taking viewers through his stages of regret, acceptance, hope, and above all, gratitude. … Throughout this special hour of Dateline, Brokaw offers viewers a rare, intimate look inside his family life through in-depth and revealing conversations about his diagnosis with his wife and children. In addition, Brokaw also speaks with his doctors and nurses, and reports on the current impact of cancer on the U.S. health care system.”

“It never occurred to me that I was going to die,” Brokaw says in the program. “I’m gonna beat this. No question. I’ll get through this somehow. That’s unrealistic in some ways.”

The Dateline episode “Tom Brokaw: A Lucky Life Interrupted” airs May 7 at 10pm ET on NBC.
