Catfish Season 4 Episode 5 Recap: Baby Catfish

On this week’s episode of MTV’s Catfish, Nev gets help from a young actor named Alex Shaffer, who actually just worked with Max. While he’s still not exactly Max, there’s no need to worry since Max will be back for next week’s episode.

As Nev got to know Alex more, he also introduced the new catfish story involving Chitara and Priscilla. Chitara is a 28-year-old mother of two from North Carolina who met Priscilla from an online dating site. Priscilla told Chitara she was a 22-year-old nurse who also happened to live in the same city inside North Carolina. The two began to talk all the time every day but despite the two living in the same city, Priscilla could never meet with Chitara. Whenever Chitara brought up the idea of doing a video chat, Priscilla had an excuse as to why she couldn’t.

catfish-ep5Things started to get worse last month when out of nowhere, Priscilla told Chitara she had no more feelings for her. She told Chitara that she didn’t love her anymore and that everything she said was a complete lie. I’m not sure what kind of person Priscilla is if she’s OK with being so cold as to break poor Chitara’s heart like that. It doesn’t help that Priscilla told Chitara that her mother died, which was the beginning of when she became distant from Chitara. Priscilla ended up sending Chitara a long message letting her know that she had fallen in love with a guy. It’s especially heartbreaking to Chitara since she finally came out to her family once she started dating Priscilla. Lucky for Chitara, her family was OK with her sexuality but things could’ve turned out ugly. Clearly Chitara is the one taking all the risks in this relationship, only to be let down.

Nev and Alex start searching for who Priscilla really is by looking through her online photos. Nothing is popping up on the image search so they head to her dating profile page. Here, they notice that a girl named Kiloni has had numerous contacts, including video chats, with Priscilla. When they search for Kiloni, they find countless fake Facebook profiles which means that most likely this dating profile for Kiloni is also a fake. Now the question is whether or not Priscilla is also in charge of this fake “Kiloni” account. My guess is, she’s got a whole community of fake profiles going.

Nev reveals all the information to Chitara and she cannot believe that she’s being manipulated by someone behind a keyboard. In order to set up a time to meet with Priscilla, Nev texts her asking for a return message. He never gets a message back from Priscilla, so Chitara calls Priscilla herself. She’s shocked that Nev is there and thinks that Chitara simply needs to move on, just like she has. Eventually Nev gets Priscilla to agree to meet with them.

Once they arrive at the house, Chitara already knows this is going downhill. She tells Nev that the house they’ve arrived at is nothing like how Priscilla had described it. Chitara was right in her assessment since someone named Ashanti answers the door and lets Nev know she’s Priscilla.

The freaky part is that catfish-ep5-nev-doorAshanti just turned 18 a couple weeks ago, meaning her relationship with Chitara was going on while she was underage. Yikes! Ashanti doesn’t seem to care what Chitara has to say or think that what she’s done to Chitara is wrong. She tells the group that she gave Chitara multiple hints and assumed Chitara knew she was lying. One cannot assume things where someone else’s heart is concerned and be okay when the results go like this. Things get heated between the girls, so Nev heads over to talk with Ashanti alone. She lets him know that she’s been catfishing people since she was 13-years-old. She did meet a guy like she told Chitara, but she told a huge lie about her mother being dead. Let’s hope your mother is okay with that one, dear.

They all meet up again the next day, hoping to get more information as to why Ashanti created the account. She mentions that her other fake relationships ended once she got bored with them. She didn’t care if the other people had feelings for her or not but she did mention that she actually had feelings for Chitara.

Then Ashanti opens up and tells the group that when she was 13, she was going through some major drama in her life. She also was separated from her mother while her mom looked for a house for them to live in. Ashanti thought it’d be better to escape her current situation by inhabiting someone else’s life through these fake profiles. Finally, Ashanti realizes that what she did to Chitara was wrong and somewhat apologizes.

Two months later, Chitara is focusing more on taking care of her kids versus looking for love. She mentions that she’s had no contact with Ashanti since filming. To no one’s surprise, Ashanti refused to be contacted for an update, but the good news is that her Priscilla account has since been deactivated.

What were your thoughts on episode five of Catfish? Did you think Priscilla was really going to be the person in the profile? I knew she wasn’t going to be the same girl with the way she treated Chitara. At first, I thought she was afraid to admit her sexuality and that was her reasoning behind leaving Chitara hanging but even that would be too cruel. It was obvious that Ashanti didn’t care too much about Chitara’s feelings once they met. What would you do if you had that encounter with Ashanti? I was waiting for a fight to break out but I’m glad nothing did, even though it would’ve been great for the ratings. I hope Ashanti realizes that what she did was truly wrong and never makes another fake profile again. Do you think she’s stopped? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

New episodes of Catfish premiere Wednesday nights at 10/9CT on MTV.

  1. I can’t believe the amount of work that Ashanti/Priscilla had to do to keep her Catfish life going…seems way more effort than is worth it, even if she was trying to escape her bad life. I sincerely hope things work out for both Ashanti and Chitara. (also a side note, I loved that they used “Trouble” by Ethel & The Chordtones when Nev, Alex, Chitara and her friends all go go-kart racing, I really love that song it’s so good to hear a woman rocking like that)
