Jane the Virgin Episode 4 Recap: Daddy Issues

As “Chapter Four” of Jane the Virgin aired, we see Jane working with Michael and her family on plans for the wedding. Everything seems to be going as planned until Jane realizes that her feeling for Rafael might be getting in the way. It may have to deal with the fact that she has a sex dream about Rafael later that night while in bed with her fiancé, Michael. Yikes! Jane confides in her mother and explains the dream she had guest-starring Rafael. Jane tries to push it off, saying that these feelings could easily be explained by the fact that she’s having his baby. While Jane’s mom Xo isn’t too convinced that her daughter’s feelings can easily be pushed off, she advises her to keep her distance with Rafael. It may take a good four feet or so in distance, since he’s so irresistible.

Trying to keep on track with her wedding plans since it’s only a week away, Jane heads to her pre-cana counseling meeting with Michael. It seems a bit foolish to go to a priest who has never been married before for marriage counseling advice, but, hey, to each their own. When the priest asks if they’ve had any rough patches they’ve had to already overcome, Michael leaves it to Jane to explain. She tells him about her baby situation and you can tell that Jane-the-virgin-pre-canathis wasn’t in the pre-cana training. The priest tries to understand everything in Jane’s unique situation and asks for her to confirm that there’s no longer any feelings for the baby’s father, Rafael. Michael answers for her immediately but Jane hesitates to answer no. Michael notices this and questions why the hesitation in her answer. Jane is a good Catholic girl and can’t lie with the priest present, so she tells Michael the truth about her sex dream with Rafael. He’s beyond upset, which is understandable, but he needs to realize that she’s having this man’s baby. She’s also had a previous fling with Rafael, so it’s not like he’s a stranger. Michael feels he’s left with no other choice than to think about canceling the wedding if Jane has feelings for Rafael.

One man obsessed with Jane at the moment is her father, Rogelio. He’s still at the hotel and can’t help but seem a bit creepy and stalkerish. He’s still determined to tell Jane that he’s her father but for some reason he hasn’t done so yet. As Jane’s wedding is quickly approaching, Xo realizes that she needs to talk with Rogelio. She heads out to meet him at his trailer but misses him since he’s already at the hotel. Unfortunately for Xo, she meets his ex-wife who is half dressed as she answers his trailer door. She also tells her that the bracelet Xo thought Rogelio had engraved specifically for her is actually not a gift at all. It’s his ex-wife’s bracelet that Rogelio had made for her as a gift which must’ve fallen off while she was making gift baskets. Yeah, that one had to hurt. It looks like this is a high school relationship being played out on TV.

Michael is still up to no good with keeping his secret about Petra from Jane. He’s still trying to keep Petra out of the jailhouse, but now he’s crunched for time. Michael begs for another hour to prove that Petra is innocent and that’s all the time he has left to come up with something. Michael shows Petra all the evidence they have against her and she’s not willing to give up any more information. They have her photos and fingerprints everywhere so along with that, her motives would fit perfectly to kill Zaz. She tells Michael that she’s innocent, which I also agree with Michael on that she is telling the truth. However, she won’t tell Michael where she was when she was in the stairway so she has an alibi. The only option they have left is to go back into the room and look for anything that would be out of place. Petra points out that the police will have to pay for the damages they’re causing the hotel. Michael takes a further look into a hole that’s in the wall and finds out that it fits perfectly with a bellhop cart. He shows the evidence to his team just in time for Petra to remain innocent.

Jane tries to keep her distance from Rafael but she can’t help but be overwhelmed by his charming good looks. Every time she sees him she falls into this trance where she tunes everything out and focuses on Rafael … sort of. Yes, she focuses on Rafael, but she’s basically only drooling while staring at him and not paying attention to what he says. That’s why she’s confused when he gets excited that Jane agrees to write a magazine article about the hotel for him. Poor Jane was too distracted by his good looks and now has extra work to do for him — as if having his baby wasn’t enough.

Rafael isn’t only a looker, but also a brain — remind me why he’s with Petra? However he does use Petra to help him win over his dad over in a business plan. Petra is the bait as she makes it seem like she’s going to help Rafael’s old opponent out while in reality, she’s scheming him. Seems like this is the only good thing I’ve seen Petra do for her husband since the series has been airing! While basking in their victory, Rafael makes a joke about how convincing Petra can be when she’s using people and pretending to be their allies just to get what she wants. That’s when he pops the question of how long she was seeing Zaz. Well, hello, didn’t see that one coming! Petra is beyond shocked to hear this and questions what Rafael is talking about. He’s tired of hearing her excuses so he finally lets her have it. He tells her that they’re over, and I could smell the fumes burning off of Petra. Good for Rafael, I’m happy that he had the courage to finally stand up for himself and do this! Good riddance, Petra, we won’t miss you! Now to wait and see what her backlash act will be. Uh oh, watch out Michael!

Jane is determined to win Michael back but has no idea how she’ll get him back after what she confessed to him. She has another talk with her mother and asks for advice. While Xo tells her that she would convince her love for someone with some sex Jane can’t do this. She tells her to find “Jane’s way” and Jane has the perfect idea. Jane may not be able to perform the actions of sex but she knows what Michael wants and is a writer. She gets to cracking on her version of a Fifty Shades of Grey letter. She’s so happy with her work that she wants it delivered to Michael right away. He’s not in his office when she shows up so she has it placed in his backpack. Once I knew the language of what her letter would be, I knew that an epic mix up would happen. Let’s not say I told you so.

Jane finally gets to talk with Michael after he’s been distracting her the entire day, only to find out that he never received her letter. He did receive the nice magazine article about the hotel, though. Whoops, looks like I was right and Jane mixed up the letters. Of course, Jane is running to catch Rafael before he Jane-the-virgin-Rafael-letterreads the X-rated letter but she’s too late. Rafael doesn’t let Jane explain herself before he starts explaining himself and how he feels. He says that he understands they’ve been getting a little bit closer now but that doesn’t mean they can have a relationship. Finally Jane is able to get a word in and tells him that the letter was meant for her fiancé, Michael. Rafael feels a bit foolish and now understands how that would all make sense. He goes on to tell her that it would be weird to have to explain to her that he sees Jane as a sister while she would have these strong feelings towards him. And just like that, smack. Ouch, that one had to hurt while it hit Jane in the face. Now she’s lost all feelings for Rafael since he doesn’t feel the same way towards her.

Jane goes with Xo and her Abuela to try on some wedding dresses and gets a couple surprise visitors. At first, Jane is in the fitting room when she hears a voice that she recognizes. It’s Michael, and she starts panicking because it’s bad luck for the groom to see the bride in the dress before the wedding. So the two awkwardly walk backwards towards each other until they meet and can hold each other’s hands. Michael tells Jane that his biggest fear was having her keep the baby, making him have to raise another man’s child. She reassures him that’s not what she wants and he’s now aware of that. He knows that what he said before was wrong and it would be a huge mistake if he didn’t marry her. Aw, I know Jane must be super emotional with her hormones going crazy right now. Jane is able to slip Michael the note that was intended for him but accidentally got to Rafael. She doesn’t tell him all the details about the mix up because she knows he’ll enjoy reading it.

Jane-the-virgin-Rogelio-dressAfter stepping out in a dress to show to her family, Jane and her entourage hear these loud screams coming from outside. The flashing lights blind the man as he stumbles inside telling the crazy people outside to leave. You can already guess who this man is but for Jane, she’s shocked to see Rogelio at her wedding dress appointment. Especially when he tells her that he was outside lurking from afar trying not to cause a scene that would make him noticed. Xo can’t believe he’s found them, and Jane can’t believe that her mother knows the mega telenovela star. Xo finally tells Rogelio to tell Jane the truth and let’s just say it’s not so easy for him to be so compassionate. When he finally gathers his words together he blurts out that he’s her father. Jane was always told that her father was a military man but she never thought that he played the role of one on a telenovela. Once Jane realizes that her mother knew all this time who her father was she’s done with trying on dresses. She tells everyone including her Abuela, to leave. I understand how Jane might feel betrayed since Xo didn’t tell her who her father was after all these years but, she must think there’s a reason for her not telling Jane, right?

Right before the episode finishes we see another one of those crazy sex dreams going on between Jane and Rafael. It’s odd because we thought Jane lost all her feelings in Rafael once he told her that she was basically another one of his sisters. Well, this is true and the one having the dream is actually Rafael. When he wakes up from the dream he’s shocked that it even happened, but I’m not surprised. Rafael, you like Jane and I know Jane still has a soft spot for you. Let’s see if either of them will tell the other about their dreams in the next episode.

What were your thoughts on “Chapter Four” of Jane the Virgin? Do you think these dreams Rafael and Jane are having mean something or are just a onetime thing? I think that there’s a deeper meaning to them because I can see the sparks between Jane and Rafael. Now that he’s had a dream, it’s like he’s finally allowing his feelings towards Jane show through. What do you think about Rafael telling Petra that they’re done? I can’t believe he just dropped the bomb on her like that after exposing her secret affair with Zaz. I’m glad he did but I’m afraid she’ll retaliate. Any thoughts on who she’s got on the top of her hit list? Do you think that Jane reacted in a reasonable way when she found out Rogelio was her father? She didn’t let Xo explain herself, but I think she’ll eventually let her. Jane needs to know the ugly side to her telenovela superstar father. Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
