Three-time men’s world champion Patrick Chan of Canada will not skate in this year’s event, leaving the field open for Olympic gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan and U.S. competitors Max Aaron and Jeremy Abbott. In pairs, 2014 Olympic medalists Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany and Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov of Russia are the strongest competitors. The world’s premier ice dancers, the USA’s Meryl Davis and Charlie White and Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, are skipping the world championships, making Russia’s Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov the frontrunners.
