Ruby Dee was as well-known for her activism in the civil rights movement, with her late husband, Ossie Davis, as for her performances on stage and screen. Among her memorable roles, she received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination in 2007 for American Gangster, and was nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards, winning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Special in 1990 for her role in Decoration Day. Her other Emmy-nominated performances came in 1964 (The Nurses), 1979 (Roots: The Next Generations), 1988 (Lincoln), 1990 (China Beach) and 1993 (Evening Shade).
