Tyler Perry premieres two new series on OWN: “The Haves and the Have Nots,” and “Love Thy Neighbor”

The prolific Tyler Perry is premiering two new series on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network over the course of two nights, May 28 and 29 — a one-hour ensemble drama called The Haves and the Have Nots on May 28, and the sitcom Love Thy Neighbor on May 29. Each series will debut with back-to-back episodes on their respective nights, and are OWN’s first two scripted shows.

Leading into these new series, Tyler Perry will be a guest of OWN’s namesake, Oprah Winfrey, on an episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter airing Sunday, May 26, at 9pm ET/PT on OWN. In the episode, Oprah sits down with Tyler Perry at his home, and the two friends discuss his life and career, his critics (as in the video below), and talk about the creative process behind The Haves and the Have Nots and Love Thy Neighbor.

The Haves and the Have Nots — created, written, directed and executive produced by Tyler Perry — follows the dynamic between the rich and powerful Cryer family and the hired help who work in their mansion in Savannah. John Schneider plays Cryer patriarch Jim Cryer, a judge with a double life and tawdry affairs; Renée Lawless plays his dutiful wife, Katheryn Cryer, who will do anything to protect her family’s status; Aaron O’Connor plays son Wyatt Cryer, a troubled jock who is in and out of rehab; and Jacyln Betham plays daughter Amanda Cryer, a struggling law student. Crystal Fox stars as Hanna Young, the Cryers’ maid and the matriarch of her own family, which includes son Benny (Tyler Lepley), the glue who keeps the family together. Hanna has a dark secret — her estranged daughter, Candace (Tika Sumpter), a manipulative opportunist who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Coincidentally, Candace finds out that her newfound friend Amanda’s father is Jim Cryer, the very man who has been paying her for sex, and Candace views this knowledge as the opportunity of a lifetime.

Additional characters in The Haves and the Have Nots include the Cryers’ chef Celine (Eva Tamargo); their wealthy friends Veronica (Angela Robinson) and David Harrington (Peter Parros); and son Wyatt’s rehab counselor, Jeffery Harrington (Gavin Houston).

Tyler Perry also created, writes, directs and executive produces Love Thy Neighbor, a half-hour comedy set at The Love Train Diner, a family-run restaurant. Diner owner and feisty family matriarch Hattie Mae Love (Patrice Lovely) has her hands full not only managing her customers, but family drama, as well. Her daughter Linda (Kendra C. Johnson) splits her time between Hattie’s home and the apartment she shares with her philandering husband. Linda’s son Danny (Andre Hall), a recent college grad, moves into a bachelor pad with his best friend Sam (Jonathan Chase) and lands a job at an internet design firm alongside beautiful co-workers Marianna (Zulay Henao) and Drew (Darmira Brunson). Meanwhile, Uncle Floyd (Palmer Williams) is an ever-present thorn in the Love family’s side.
