The Weather Channel to air special presentation about Oklahoma tornado

The Weather Channel has announced that it will be debuting a one-hour special called The Oklahoma Tornado Tragedy: A Weather Channel Special Presentation Thursday, May 23, at 9pm ET. The program looks at the massive, EF5 tornado that devastated the town of Moore, Oklahoma, on May 20, killing at least 24, injuring hundreds, and potentially leaving upward of $2 billion worth of damage in its wake.

The Oklahoma Tornado Tragedy recounts the 40 minutes that the tornado was on the ground, from its approach to the town through its aftermath, as it leveled two schools, destroyed neighborhoods and cars, badly damaged a hospital and other buildings, and caused an as-yet-uncounted number of fatalities and injuries.

Mike Bettes, on-camera meteorologist for The Weather Channel, will host The Oklahoma Tornado Tragedy. The special also features interviews with The Weather Channel’s Jim Cantore, Dr. Greg Forbes and Stephanie Abrams, as well as Storm Riders stars Simon Brewer and Juston Drake.

The Weather Channel says it will also feature clips from this special as part of its coverage of the Oklahoma tornado at weather.com.

The Oklahoma Tornado Tragedy: A Weather Channel Special Presentation premieres May 23 at 9pm ET on The Weather Channel, with a repeat at midnight ET.

The special encores on The Weather Channel May 24 at 4pm ET.
