MSNBC’s Ed Schultz to interview videographer of infamous Mitt Romney 47 percent comments

Updated March 13, 2013, 7:52pm CT

It was the video that some say changed the course of the 2012 presidential election, and certainly the way people thought and talked about it. Republican candidate Gov. Mitt Romney was surreptitiously videotaped speaking before a private fundraising gathering in May 2012 where he stated that, “There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for [President Obama] no matter what. All right — there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. … These are people who pay no income tax.” Romney also stated in the video that, “[M]y job is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

The video exploded onto the scene in September 2012 when David Corn of Mother Jones reported on it, and “47 percent” haunted Gov. Romney throughout the rest of the campaign. Ironically, he even ended up winning 47 percent of the vote when all was said and done.

Through it all, the identity of the person who secretly recorded these comments remained a secret. On tonight’s (March 13) The Ed Show on MSNBC, however, the man breaks his silence in an exclusive interview with host Ed Schultz. This will be the first time the man has revealed his identity and his motivation for going public with the video. The exclusive interview will run for the whole hour of The Ed Show.

UPDATE 3/13/13: The videographer revealed himself to be Scott Prouty.

Although the man will be speaking publicly for the first time on The Ed Show, he did offer some insights to The Huffington Post, which has kept his identity secret until he reveals his identity on The Ed Show. According to The Huffington Post, the man was a bartender for the catering company at the Romney fundraiser. Tomorrow (March 14) morning, he will be making an appearance on HuffPost Live.

“I felt it was a civic duty,” the man says in the HuffPost article. “I couldn’t sleep after I watched [the video]. I felt like I had a duty to expose it.”

The exclusive interview with the Mitt Romney 47 percent videographer airs on The Ed Show March 13 at 8pm ET on MSNBC.
