“Making the Motherlode” special goes behind the scenes of Discovery’s “Gold Rush” Season 3

Last Friday’s airing of Gold Rush Live on Discovery Channel was the No. 1 series in all of television among Men 25-54/18-49 that night, with over 10 million people watching, according to Nielsen. So it’s no surprise that Discovery would try to pan for more ratings gold even though Gold Rush Season 3 is now over. Tonight, March 1, at 8pm ET/PT, the network will debut Making the Motherlode, an hourlong, behind-the-scenes look at Gold Rush Season 3.

Gold Rush Season 3 saw the miners — Todd Hoffman, Jack Hoffman, Dave Turin, Parker Schnabel and Fred Hurt and the Dakota boys — bring in a grand total of 1,158 ounces of gold between the three crews. Todd Hoffman had set an ambitious 1,000 ounce goal at the start of Season 3, and while he fell short, he still pulled off a $1.28 million payday after he doubled down and secured two claims and twice the men and machines. Todd’s crew mined 803 ounces of gold for the season. Parker Schnabel turned a profit and mined 192 ounces, while “Dakota” Fred Hurt also hit his mark with 163 ounces of gold for the season.

During Gold Rush Live, there was a sneak peek of Season 4 of Gold Rush, which will include Todd Hoffman and Dave Turin journeying to South America to strike it rich, among other surprises.

Before Season 4 starts, this summer will also see the premiere of Discovery’s six-part series Gold Rush: The Off-Season, which documents Todd’s journey down South. Fred will continue to search for the mother lode by looking for gold in remote glacial territory, and Parker Schnabel decides to head north to the Klondike with Tony Beets leading the way for Schnabel as his mentor.

Tonight’s behind the scenes special, Making the Motherlode, looks to feature video recaps from Season 3 and more. It will be followed by new episodes of Yukon Men and Bering Sea Gold.

Gold Rush: Making the Motherlode premieres March 1 at 8pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel, and re-airs March 2 at 1am ET/PT, and March 3 at 12pm ET/PT.
