“America’s Doomsday Plan” to be revealed on Discovery Channel

Almost certainly, it was conceived by a former Boy Scout — it’s the ultimate circumstance in which to “be prepared.” With devastating events in recent years like Hurricane Sandy, the tidal wave and nuclear disaster in Japan, the earthquakes in Haiti and Indonesia, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the so-called “doomsday” scenario has been a subject of a little more than just speculation. Discovery Channel looks at the United States government’s contingency plan for if and when such a disaster occurs in America’s Doomsday Plan, premiering Sunday, Nov. 4 at 10pm ET/PT.

“I don’t want to have a major event and no longer have a government,” Damon Penn, FEMA’s Assistant Adminstrator of the National Continuity Programs Directorate, says. Penn is a featured interview in America’s Doomsday Plan. “I’ve got to be ready so that that never happens. It’s all about preserving our way of life regardless of what the circumstances are.”

America’s response to disaster on its shores has been variable over the years. From the heroic efforts in the wake of 9/11 to the response to Hurricane Katrina, as well as the earthquakes that periodically rock the West Coast, we’ve had periodic glimpses of how our government reacts to domestic catastrophes. But in America’s Doomsday Plan, viewers will see government officials and other insiders interviewed who will share what they know of the billion-dollar master plans that lie in wait for any conceivable event, and show the high-security facilities that are part of those plans and of which many Americans aren’t even aware.

America’s Doomsday Plan takes viewers 2,000 feet deep into Cheyenne Mountain, where the military can bunker down into its command center, and shares how we’ve managed in the past to outsmart our darkest enemies, as well as how the government continues to strategize and plan for imminent disaster.
