When are the presidential debates — A handy guide to October’s presidential and vice presidential televised debates
Now that the hype, pageantry, cheerleading and preaching to the converted that went on during the Republican and Democratic conventions are over, it’s time to see how the candidates fare in debating the issues in this pivotal election. The first presidential debate is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 3. The following week, vice presidential candidates square off, followed by two more presidential debates leading up to the Nov. 6 election.

Schedule and details for the 2012 presidential and vice presidential debates, airing live on most major broadcast and cable news networks:
Oct. 3: Presidential Debate (9pm ET Live) Mitt Romney and Barack Obama engage in their first presidential debate, with domestic policy the primary focus. PBS NewsHour executive editor Jim Lehrer moderates at the University of Denver in Colorado.
Oct. 11: Vice Presidential Debate (9pm ET Live) Vice presidential candidates Paul Ryan and Joe Biden debate foreign and domestic policy at Centre College in Danville, Ky. ABC News’ Martha Raddatz moderates.
Oct. 16: Presidential Debate (9pm ET Live) Romney and Obama take citizens’ questions on foreign and domestic issues in a town-hall meeting format. CNN’s chief political correspondent Candy Crowley moderates at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY.
Oct. 22: Presidential Debate (9pm ET Live) The final presidential debate before the Nov. 6 election focuses on foreign policy. Bob Schieffer of CBS News moderates at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla.
