“Long Island Medium” season 3 recaps for “Homecoming” and “A Medium Surprise”

She’s baaack!!! Long Island Medium Theresa Caputo returned for a third season last night with two back-to-back new episodes: “Homecoming” and “A Medium Surprise.” Season 3 of Long Island Medium (TLC Sundays at 9pm ET/PT) features 16 new episodes, which means the Kleenex box at my house will now be part of my coffee table arrangement for the next eight-plus weeks.

Long Island Medium season 3Initially, “Homecoming” lacked the natural conversational feel of the Caputo household, and instead felt more scripted and forced versus their usual fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants diatribes and annoyances, but it eventually came together. Theresa carrying on about Larry Jr. coming home from college was a bit much. The whole idea of Theresa actually thinking that her “Prince” — son Larry Jr. — would really live under her roof for-ever — well, come on — that’s a hard storyline to buy into. Theresa’s far too intelligent to believe that’s even a remote possibility, but watching Larry Jr. and his girlfriend of four years squirm at her ramblings about blowing out his upstairs bedroom to accommodate the two permanently and potential their grandchildren was slightly amusing. Vanessa called her mom’s homecoming for Larry Jr. out best: “My brother comes home all the time and his college is 45 minutes away.”  But Theresa was preparing for the “best summer ever” and that meant having her little Larry home.

Theresa’s surprise medium-on-the-street spirit interventions are where the show works best. In “Homecoming,” a young mother (Vanessa) and her aunt were stopped by Theresa at a local store. Theresa asked about the deaths of Vanessa’s mother and father, and quickly validated the spirit presence by referencing a special rocking chair and the color of her baby’s bedroom (yellow). She also noted Vanessa’s concerns about not “feeling” her mother anymore. “I can’t even tell you how happy I am knowing she is with me and watching over me and my son,” Vanessa shared.

Next up was a most unusual group reading where Theresa connected with a middle-aged woman in when she saw a spirit behind the woman doing the sign of the cross. Apparently, the woman — a devout Catholic — was reluctant to come to the group reading, unsure if a medium’s work was accepted in her religion. Theresa explained that the spirit was actually her mother and she was showing the sign of a cross as a way to tell the woman it was OK to be here, as she was about to receive a message that would change her life forever.

Pay attention, for this one was, at first, hard to follow. Theresa also learned through the spirit that the middle-aged woman [I didn’t catch her name] also lost a daughter named Elizabeth at the age of 2. Elizabeth’s soul, however, was re-entered into one of her grandchildren. Say what????

Yes. A first on Long Island Medium — but spirit was telling Theresa that little Elizabeth’s soul was re-entered into her granddaughter Alexis (unsure of spelling here), who is now 8. The pained woman cried in acknowledgement, claiming she always knew it was “Lizza’s spirit.” The woman’s other daughter [mother of Alexis and sister to Elizabeth], who was in attendance, as well, was equally as moved as she described: “I felt my sister around me my whole life until my daughter was born.”

Theresa told them: “God has granted your wish by allowing your daughter’s soul to re-enter into one of your grandchildren. …This soul has re-entered into this lifetime and that’s something that usually doesn’t happen.”

Anyways, hard to top that reading, but Theresa lightened the mood by moving on to another attendee — Ginger from Amityville, New York — who lost her mother and father. Her spirit connection was validated by the fact that Theresa was able to describe her parents’ relationship perfectly and that Theresa knew that Ginger still kept her mother’s muumuu dresses.

The second episode of Long Island Medium Season 3, “A Medium Surprise,” was more lighthearted as it focused on the Caputo family’s plans to surprise Theresa for her 45th birthday.

A private reading at Theresa’s house introduced viewers to another mother and daughter who were seeking answers to the death of their daughter/sister, Laura, who lost her 15-year battle with an eating disorder. Theresa was able to validate Laura’s spiritual presence when she shared what Laura was asking her to tell them both, giving them the answers they needed so they could move on.

Cameras later followed Theresa to a self-serve yogurt shop, where two patrons — a mother and teen daughter — are interrupted with a spiritual intervention from their husband/father. Theresa amazed — validating nicknames, how he died, the spirit’s former record collection, and giving them the message they needed to hear to heal. At a home reading, Theresa also helped a young mother who  lost her husband to an anaphylactic shock brought on by an egg allergy.

The episode concluded with Theresa’s restless feelings being confirmed. “I’ve got a very uneasy feeling about tonight — something just feels off,” Theresa said. And to make matters worse, her spirit guides were showing her “Jack squat.”

Chalk one up for the spirits knowing when to keep a secret — husband Larry was able to surprise Theresa for her 45th.

“People think that because I’m a psychic medium that I know everything,” the birthday girl shared.  “But that’s just simply not the case!”

New episodes of Long Island Medium air Sunday nights at 9/8CT on TLC.
