“GMA” co-anchor Robin Roberts to begin medical leave Sept. 3

This morning on ABC’s Good Morning America, co-anchor Robin Roberts announced that this Friday, Aug. 31, will be her last day on air before she starts an extended medical leave. In June, five years after a fight with breast cancer, Roberts announced that she has been diagnosed with MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome), and that her sister, Sally-Ann, is an almost exactly perfect match for the bone marrow that will be used in a transplant.

ABC says that all this week, the program will celebrate Roberts, and provide extensive reporting on her treatment, procedure and recovery process. Her doctor will also be interviewed about how she is preparing for the bone marrow transplant, and explain what she can expect in the coming months. Additionally, the show will feature stories about families who have faced and overcome an MDS diagnosis.

Beginning on Thursday, Roberts’ team and her doctors will post information on her recovery in the months ahead, and viewers will be able to leave personal messages for her (the link will be shared on Thursday). There will also be information on how to become a bone marrow donor through BeTheMatch.org.
