High school can be a terrible time for almost anyone. Dealing with issues of self-esteem, identity and sexuality while trying to make the grade are tough enough, but going through it all as a teen mom or while pregnant makes the pressure exponentially more unbearable. But in one Denver high school, the effort is being made to help some of these young moms to keep up and stay in school so that they and their children might have a chance at a better life. And it’s all being detailed in a six-part series, High School Moms, premiering on TLC Aug. 12 at 10pm ET (and encoring on Discovery Fit & Health Aug. 16 at 10pm ET).
Florence Crittendon High School is the setting for High School Moms, and as the series enters its halls to see what it’s like for struggling teen families to get the support they need. The school boasts a faculty devoted to its mission, nursing facilities for younger mothers and even an on-site daycare center. But at the heart of the series are the core issues facing each one of these young parents, regardless of how well their high-school experience is being facilitated. They’re they same questions raised by high-school mothers everywhere: When you’re struggling with the influx of bills as a new mother, possibly with an absentee father, and you have a screaming infant that needs you, how important does that algebra test really seem?
High School Moms looks at the many facets of life faced by these teens as they juggle nursing and English, diapers and driver’s ed, all while confronting decisions about how to pay for daycare and how they’re going to manage getting to prom. It’s a tough life any way you cut it, and High School Moms doesn’t spare the barbs.
