Jennifer Hudson sang an emotional tribute to the late Whitney Houston at the 2012 Grammy Awards. With only the barest of accompaniment from a piano player, Hudson silenced the entire room in a stunning rendition of “I Will Always Love You,” one of Houston’s biggest hits.

The world was saddened to learn of Whitney Houston’s unexpected death on Saturday. She was found in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton, just hours before an annual pre-Grammy party thrown by Arista Records founder Clive Davis. Houston’s troubled marriage to Bobby Brown and battles with drug addiction were well-known; her most recent stint in rehab took place in May 2011.

During her career, Houston won six Grammy awards and performed at the Grammys eight times between 1986 and 2000. She even presented Jennifer Hudson with her first Grammy Award, for Best R&B Album in 2009.

With amazing performances from Adele, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys & Bonnie Raitt, the 2012 Grammys were overflowing with fabulous female singers. Perhaps that is the best legacy Whitney Houston leaves – creating a more powerful place for women in music and inspiring generations of new voices.
