“E:60”: Ray Allen, Gina Carano, Football Behind Bars And High-Tech Ticket Scalping

E:60 Features on the May 13 (7pm ET) edition of ESPN’s sports newsmagazine series E:60:

Ray Allen — Even as the resurgent Boston Celtics ride their sensational season deep into the playoffs, guard Ray Allen and his family are dealing with far more significant issues involving the attempted murder of Allen’s stepfather. Allen’s mother and his stepfather, Derek Hopson, have spent more than two years in a witness protection program following the 2003 attempted murder of Hopson, a psychologist married to Allen’s mother, Flora Allen-Hopson. Ernest Garlington, a counselor for at-risk youth and husband to the former wife of Allen’s stepfather, organized the attempt on Hopson’s life. Hopson was shot, but not injured. Earlier this month, Garlington was sentenced to 33 years in prison, on five counts including conspiracy to commit murder. E:60 correspondent Michael Smith unravels the crime and its impact on the Boston Celtics guard Ray Allen.

Gina Carano: MMA’s New Star — In the world of mixed martial arts (MMA), women have fought for respect as much as for notoriety. Enter Gina Carano. The daughter of former Cowboys backup quarterback Glenn Carano, Gina is blazing a new path for herself and the women who fight in MMA. Carano blends a rare combination of beauty and raw fighting skills. In this revealing E:60 profile, Gina’s parents discuss what it feels like to watch their daughter go toe to toe in a steel cage. Competitors such as Tara LaRosa and Shayna Baszler address the marketing machine behind Gina and questions whether it is good for her and the sport. In addition, Gina tells E:60 what drew her into the world of MMA, how she dropped out of college — 18 credits short of getting her degree — to pursue her dream, and the impact of her sudden stardom.

Super Crunch Bowl Behind Bars in Angola — Angola, The Louisiana State Penitentiary, is one of the largest maximum security prisons in the United States with approximately 5,000 inmates who are serving terms that average 91 years. It is also the home of the Super Crunch Bowl, an annual football game between the top players at Angola and a rival prison, which was played this year for the first time in Angola’s landmark 11,000-seat rodeo arena. E:60 correspondent Tom Farrey reports on the game and what it means to the inmates.

Ticket Scalping — Do you wonder why you can never get face-value tickets for the big sporting event? Why the ticket-selling site says “Sold Out” just minutes after the sale starts? E:60 correspondent Lisa Salters examines the new, high-tech world of ticket scalping that includes rooms in India, where dozens of typists punch in encoded letters faster than the fans can to secure tickets for major sporting events that will then be resold at inflated prices by ticket brokers in America. In addition, Salters reveals how ticket sellers like Ticketmaster are trying to fight back against this emergent scalping of U.S. sports fans.
